Contest Period: 04/28/2007 - 05/1/2007

For this contest three all source* entries were created but unfortunately only two could be submitted which I didn't know until the day of the contest. #72 Digital Dustmite was originally posted to the contest but was replaced shortly after the contest started with #73 Pinwheel.

#72 Digital Dustmite

I began by clipping out the sculptures contained in the triangular piece of architecture in the source image, then arranged and duplicated the sculptures into the shape of a bug similar to a preying mantis. The idea didn't gravitate with me. Another idea was to arrange all the sculptured people into some kind of perverse arrangement that would fill the entire canvas with writhing bodies. Laziness set in again so I duplicated and rotated my bug creature many times over and then stretched it to fit across the digital canvas which produced the underlying background of black legs seen in "Digital Dustmite." By rearranging some more bodies and repeating the duplicate and rotate process I inadverdently created the top part of what looked like a bug. By placing this over the background of black legs, rotating it and performing a bit of dodging and burning I came up with a flat organic like spider, a digital dustmite.

#73 Pinwheel

"Pinwheel" was another accidental discovery "all source" entry. The process started with reshaping the flag's perspective into a flat plane rectangle. A portion of the flag was cut out, rotated, and duplicated many times which produced a shape similar to a flower. Another piece of the flag was clipped out and the previous process was repeated to create another similar shape. The second shape was placed over the first and then made smaller. After looking at this new image I no longer saw a flower but was reminded of a pinwheel. A handle was added by clipping a piece of supporting architecture from the source. People sculptures were arranged about the composition and then smudged to create motion. A pile of discarded sculpture people was added to suggest a society built on throwing things aways and it is also symbolic of what happens to many people who attempt to ride the pinwheel of consumerism.

#74 Cirque du U.S.A

At some point the thought of arranging the sculptures into a circus act for money entered the creative stream. It took a while to come up with the arrangement, but the figures on the pillar were instantaneous. The crowd of people was created from a single characther duplicated numerous times with varying opacities and then blurred. With this piece I wanted to create depth through foreground, middle, and background. Lighting was also important to try and convey the area under a circus tent. Essentially the piece is about what people are willing to do in the pursuit of the American way. This is an all source image but I did use a font to create the dollar symbol.

* An all source image is a new image made entirely from the source image. Technically some might feel that adding a font breaks this rule but I'm not that pure.
